Despite progress overnight, work to secure and remove glass and other debris from the damaged Devon Tower stopped Saturday as strong thunderstorms entered the Oklahoma City metro.
Devon Energy Corp. officials said more glass fell from the tower Saturday and rain and strong winds have compromised the integrity of other damaged glass.
“This has made it necessary to maintain the security perimeter on streets and parks around the building,” officials said.
The tower was damaged Wednesday after an equipment malfunction led to a basket impacting the building as it swung wildly until it was later brought under control by Oklahoma City firefighters. Two contracted workers were stuck in the basket for about 45 minutes.
A fire destroyed three homes in Devon Thursday morning and damaged two others.
Fire crews were called to a home on Oakland Boulevard around 7:45 a.m. and discovered a structure fully involved.
Area resident Fiore Marrelli heard what was going on from a neighbour who called him and woke him up.
“She said she just heard a loud bang, and there was an explosion outside the window … so we got up really quick and came to the scene.”
Marrelli captured video of the blaze, and watched the fire spread from the first house.
Deputy Chief Don Yez says firefighters biggest challenge was the wind.
“The wind started to shift, it started to blow from almost every direction. So it was another element to fighting the fire where we had to try to minimize the damage as much as we could.”
